TapTune

Start, then connect the board: Connect Bluetooth (top right, board on a wall charger), or plug its USB port in. Use Chrome or Edge, because Safari can't read MIDI or Bluetooth devices.

Debug: live sensors

Every touch pin on both boards, live. Rise = how far the pin is above resting right now; peak = highest in the last moment, after removing ground noise; it has to cross the threshold to play. Ground noise = how much all pins rose together (e.g. when you touch the phone); the boards subtract it.

Wave

Blue = how far the book's signal rises (ground noise removed). Red dashed = touch threshold (drag it), grey = release. Orange band = touched, dot = note played.

Timing (Bluetooth)

Each bar is one note: how late it arrived compared with the fastest one. Spread = jitter. With Steady timing every note is played at the green line instead, so they all come out evenly.

Getting the lowest delay
  • All: use wired headphones or speakers. Bluetooth audio adds 100–250 ms.
  • Windows: Chrome or Edge. Set the sound device to 48 kHz and turn off "audio enhancements". Close other apps that use audio.
  • Mac: Chrome. Built-in speakers or a USB audio interface are fastest.
  • Android: Chrome, with battery saver off. Phones vary: newer Pixels and Samsungs are fastest. If the delay shows over 40 ms, try another device.
  • The Audio output delay number above is what the browser reports. Touch to MIDI on the board is about 4–6 ms on top of that.
